Steve HanksSteve Hanks, Artist, Painter

Few artists can duplicate the emotion and depth that Steve Hanks achieves in his spectacular watercolors. Each painting is meticulously drawn out with great attention to detail, reflecting a moment in time, often a token of the artist memory. The viewer's reward is a grand interconnectedness with the artist's favorite moments, all familiar to our own experiences as well.

Steve Hanks, whose artwork primarily reflects women and children, spent his childhood on the coast of California. His inspiration to paint developed in his late teens, after his family moved from Ventura County to New Mexico. Away from the ocean and his friends, Steve found comfort in drawing and painting. After graduation from high school, Hanks entered the Academy of Art in San Francisco in the late 1960's and later, graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. In the early 1970's, Steve Hanks began publishing a few of his originals as stone lithographs, posters, and limited edition prints.

Today, Steve Hanks continues to paint, beautiful works that reflect a mastery of form and an intricate involvement with light. Highly detailed and realistic, his watercolors urge the viewer to become part of the creative process. Steve Hanks is passionate about life, passionate about art.

In June, 1998, he was the featured artist at the prestigious Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, with a display of more than 40 originals. In September, 1999, he was honored with being Artist of the Year for the 12th Annual Pacific Rim Art Exhibition in Seattle, Washington. In February 2002, Steve Hanks was selected as a Special Guest Artist for the 20th Anniversary Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, South Carolina.

Steve Hanks has won several awards and honors. U.S. ART ranked among Americas 15 Most Popular Print Artist from 1994 to 1997, according to an annual survey of art dealers. In 1998, he was listed as the third most popular artist in the same survey.

The essence and ultimate purpose of his art is important to Steve Hanks. "I really believe that art has a place in not just being pretty pictures- that art can comfort people when they go through hard times and good times," says Hanks. "And we all know, or eventually learn, that life goes by quickly. It's full of little happenings that can pass you by-one instant they're happening, the next they're gone."

Steve Hanks resides in New Mexico, where he cares for his children and spends almost all of his spare time painting in a sun-filled studio near the mountains.
